Course Description

With the spread of the Internet and mobile devices, technology empowerment frequently determines the ability of vulnerable individuals to find employment, participate in politics, achieve higher education, and operate as equal members of society. But global access is uneven, as women are still 21% less likely to own a mobile phone than men. And access is often not enough for technology to serving as a leveling force, as it often reinforce existing societal divisions.

Understanding the relationship between gender equality and technology empowerment is central to designing, implementing, and evaluating programs in international development. But how is that understanding put into practice?

This four-week online course explores how development professionals and technologists are successfully addressing challenges of gender disparity, access to technology, gender-based violence, and gender-centered design.

Course Topics and Featured Tech

This course will consider:

  • An overview of funder approaches to gender-based programming, from current USAID Policy to evaluating the Millenium Development Goals.

  • Hands-on workshops with relevant, cutting-edge technology including the “Apps Against Abuse,” and HarrassMap.

  • Detailed simulations on gender-centered design to apply a gender perspective to the design of tech devices and tech-enabled programs.

  • Cybersecurity demonstrations and case studies of tech-enabled gender-based violence.

  • A weekly discussion on “This Week In Gender & Technology” to explore tech history contributions around the world.
